President's Message

August 2022

Imagine Rotary!

“The Rotary International President, Jennifer Jones imagines a Rotary where members act to make their dreams become reality and make the most of their club experiences. During her year, Jones will focus on four presidential initiatives that Imagine Rotary: advancing our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI); creating a welcoming club experience; empowering girls; and expanding our reach.” - Presidential Initiatives

I feel that our club is well in alignment with the Initiatives that Jennifer Jones has set forth. Our Membership already has a diverse gender split, with 42% female members. We’re working to further diversify our club’s classifications to align with our local community, and you’ve elected me as the President! While I am not the first female President, I am the Youngest Female President of the Belfast Rotary Club. I am thankful to you, my fellow Rotarians, for entrusting me to lead the club for the next Rotary Year. I am honored to be given the opportunity to serve and I look forward to learning many new things through my service. I am appreciative of the club members who have offered to help and be available to guide me as I navigate this coming year. I feel well supported. I’d like to specifically thank our immediate past President, John Golden, for the countless hours and beers we’ve enjoyed over the past year while I was ramping up for this role. Your insight and friendship are invaluable, thank you!

July was fun, and a bit hectic at times while we shifted the way our program committee works. We were able to bring a program to the club each week, but it was a bit touch and go. Thankfully we now have the Vice President, Jason Trundy, leading the charge with support from club members helping to fill the calendar. The idea is that one person takes a month to line up four guest speakers. This will help us ensure a variety of programs and to share the workload of lining up speakers. Please let Jason know if you are able to take a month on, we would greatly appreciate it!

July’s programs:

July 6 - Deirdre Good shared her classification talk.

July 13 - Peter Garrett and William Fergusson discussed the Citizens Climate Lobby as it relates to the 4 way test.

July 20 - Kristine Wentworth shared her club goals for 2022-2023.

July 27 - Guy Hamlin introduced the club to a new Internship Program that is being developed at the Belfast Area High School.

Upcoming FUN:

  • Belfast Street Party - Monday August 1st, Rotary will have an informational booth, stop in and say hello!

  • Harbor Fest is right around the corner, we will learn more at our lunch on August 3rd.

  • Club Assembly - August 17th - let’s make this fun! 24% of our membership have been with us for less than 5 years, how can we best use this meeting to engage our newer members? Reach out to me if you have ideas and can help me out here!

  • District Governor, Denis Blouin, Ing. M.Sc., is visiting August 24th

Yours in service & friendship,

Kristine Wentworth

"Where the Pleats Meet the Streets"

The long-standing tradition of a 5K road race during Maine Celtic Celebration weekend continued with this year’s running of the 10th Annual Kilted Canter 5K Run/Walk.

Despite temperatures approaching 90 degrees and humidity brutally high at 8:30 a.m., more than 100 people showed up to break more than a sweat and burn a ton of calories in the annual “Kilted Canter” 5-kilometer road race on Saturday, July 23. Check out the article in the Village Soup!

Thank you Ed Varney for your coordination and leadership of this successful event and see below for details on the next event, the Bug Run on Aug 20th!
Get ready for Harbor Fest!
August 19 - 21
Less than three weeks from now we celebrate our 15th annual Belfast Harbor Fest. This is a major Rotary project and we need your help. Please come to the meeting Wednesday to learn how you can best help the club and the community for an hour or two From August 19-21. Incidentally, you will also be treated to a lobster roll or prime rib sandwich to thank you all for the success of our Spring Golf Fundraiser.

We still need a couple of teams for the boatbuilding challenge and as always we accept more entries into the fun and crazy Cardboard Boat races Sunday morning.

Thanks to the committee for their long hours of planning. We should see the results soon, so please decide to be a part of this Belfast Rotary tradition.
