President's Message

President’s Message December 2021

This is the season when people of all faiths and cultures are pushing back against the planetary darkness.  We string bulbs, ignite bonfires, and light candles.  And we sing.” -Anita Diamant

Based on our Member Survey we will be holding an in-person Holiday Party at the Shrine Club on Wednesday evening, December 8 at 5:00 PM.  We respectfully request that all attendees be vaccinated to attend this meeting. Also, if you've been exposed to Covid-19 or are not feeling well, please do not attend this event.

On November 3, we heard from Christina McAnuff from the Olympia Snowe Women's Leadership Institute.  The institute provides a leadership program for high school age girls highlighting self-esteem and leadership skills.

On November 10, Andrea Talty, the mayor of the Belfast Athenahealth office.  Andreas is a Vice President/Manager of the office.  She provided us with insight into what Athenahealth does.  They provide medical billing software and medical technology products.  Athenahealth processes 18 million checks daily.

On November 16, we hosted a Rotary Take-over of Marshall Wharf Brewery.  Nine Rotarians attended along with eight prospective members.  A good time was had by all in a semi-open environment.

On November 17 we heard from our own Lee Woodward and Marjorie Crowley about the 100 Fund.  Lee provided a history of the program and Marjorie outlined this year's plan including gift cards from Reny's and Colburn Shoe.  Yes, schnaaps was discussed.

There was no meeting on November 24 as we gave everybody the day before Thanksgiving the day off.

Yours in Service,

John

Update on Belfast Rotary's 100 Fund

A Thanks-for-Giving Message

Belfast Rotary 100 Fund

In the spirit of Thanksgiving I am sending this sincere thanks-for-giving message on behalf of the Belfast Rotary Club 100 Fund. In order to meet its goal of providing 160 local needy children with Christmas gift certificates, the 100 Fund needs to meet two challenges. First, we need to raise $6,000 from Rotarians and friends of Rotary by December 15. Second, we need to receive at least 50 individual donations by that same date.

Typically, by Thanksgiving Day the 100 Fund receives $4,000 in donations from 25 donors. We were certainly hoping to reach that benchmark this year. Much to our surprise we have far exceeded a normal year. As of this time we have received donations from 23 Rotarians and friends of Rotary totaling $5,055. We are certainly on a record pace.

At no time in the 38 years of the 100 Fund have we reached our fundraising goal by December 1. Could this be the year?

One last thought, Marjorie informs me that her Thanksgiving would not be complete without adding peppermint schnapps to Thanksgiving dishes of mashed potatoes and stuffing. To each their own.

Thank you all for your continued support.

John and Beverly O'Malia are offering 'free' Christmas trees to Rotary members.  There is a catch, you must make a contribution to Rotary.  The trees will be available on December 3.  Please read the poem below as it provides all the information:

A CHRISTMAS TREE FOR A ROTARY FEE

Come to 17 Pitcher Road for a Christmas tree

You can have one, just make a donation to Belfast Rotary

Cut your tree Friday December third

With a fine tree Christmas will not be absurd

Some trees are tall and some are small

But Christmas trees we have them all

Pick a tree from what you see

With a donation to Rotary it is almost FREE!

We will be open from two to four

We will help cut the tree so you are not sore

A drink is available from the host

To cut a tree, that will be the boast

Merry Christmas to all,

John and Bev O’Malia
