“Few will doubt that humankind has created a planet-sized problem for itself. No one wished it so, but we are the first species to become a geophysical force, altering Earth’s climate, a role previously reserved for tectonics, sun flares and glacial cycles.” Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge, Edward O. Wilson [1998]

On April 20, Ed Varney reviewed the Charitable Fund Raiser effort. Teams were assembled at the Shrine Club and packets were distributed to those in attendance. The deadline for ads in the Bangor Daily News is May 18. Our goal is $12,000 with a stretch goal of $15,000. If you haven’t received a packet or an assignment, contact your team captain. A list of teams and team captains appears later in the Nairator.
On April 27, Colby Horne, the owner of the Colburn Shoe Store in Belfast spoke to us about the store and his personal journey. Colburn Shoes is the oldest shoe store in America. The store was started in 1832 by W. T. Colburn. The Horne family purchased the store 100 years ago in 1922. The store has been located at 79 Main Street since 1905.
Colby went to Husson University and played football. He graduated with a teaching degree, but never taught. He credits his experience with Enterprise Rent-A-Car with giving him the experience and know how to run a business. He told some tales of the ins and outs of the shoe business - the good and the bad. Colby is the fifth generation owner of the store.
If you haven’t heard the news, we’re back at the Shrine Club. Starting March 30, the club returned to hybrid meetings so you can join us for lunch at the Shrine Club or on Zoom.
