Baseball:
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." October was a busy month even with baseball playoffs, football and the NBA and NHL seasons starting. On October 6, our Congressman, Jared Golden joined our Zoom meeting. He spoke about the visit of the Secretary of Labor to Maine to discuss our foresting/logging activities. He then answered questions about infrastructure, the safety net and the CMP Corridor among other topics.
On October 13, we were joined by Chris Nickerson, the new owner of the Whale's Tooth Pub in Lincolnville Beach. He and his wife, Martha, have an interesting business model. They purchased the Northport Lodge Inn which is currently being used to house their workers. They plan on opening the inn next year and plan on opening a bakery on the first floor. After hearing his description of what they are doing, I sure felt like paying the “Tooth” a visit.
On October 20, Ari Snider, a former Rotary Youth Exchange student from Belfast spoke to us about his work reporting for Maine Public Radio on Maine's refugee, immigrant, and asylum-seeking communities in Maine.
The Board of Directors sent a Questionaire to all members to get feedback on the possibility of having a Holiday Party and to inquire about our Zoom meeting structure so that we can better serve the membership. More on that after we've examined the data.
Finally, on October 27, we heard from Sandy Smith from the Boy Scouts of America. Sandy is the BSA District Executive for Waldo County. Sandy and Chuck Major, who joined him, belong to the Katahdin Area Council for the Boy Scouts of America. We learned that the Boy Scouts also have girls. Sandy spoke about the current difficulties facing the BSA and he discussed the programs that are in place including Youth Protection Training that all BSA leaders are required to take. He also reviewed the various levels of scouting from Cubs to Explorers and Sea Scouts.
Also on October 27 we heard from Marjorie Crowley and Lee Woodward as they kicked off this year's 100 Fund. Once again, we will be issuing gift cards from area businesses due to pandemic restrictions. Marjorie spoke of some major supply issues which may impact this year's program. There will be 150 children involved. I ask all of you to dig deep and support this worthwhile program. Also, we're looking for someone to donate a bottle of Schnaaps (just kidding).
