President's Message

Summer is winding down, tourists are leaving, kids are back in school, and life is changing into a different routine.  That is certainly the case for our Rotary Club.

We're now doing "hybrid" meetings.  Some members meet at the Shrine Club while others continue to meet on Zoom. At the Shrine Club there is plenty of room for attendees to comfortably and properly socially distance, with 3 people per table and the tables spread out.  Lunch is available for $10, catered by Rollies (hot lunch or chef's salad), by reservation.  If you want a lunch, please let Jill know by Sunday afternoon.  There is now WiFi at the Shrine Club, which enables the Zoom meeting to be projected and for both meetings to see and hear each other. Thanks especially to John Golden for getting this set up and continuing to run the technology at the meetings and to Duke for arranging lunches.

Our District Governor, Joel Philibert, attended our meeting via Zoom on August 26 and discussed a number of topics.  Some highlights:
  • He discussed this year's District Project, which is a water project in southern Peru, including an education element; our club, as we always do, pledged $1000 towards the project.
  • In 2022, the 10 Rotary Clubs in Maine that presently are in District 7810 will join our District 7790; these clubs are in far eastern and northern Maine and were previously in a District with clubs in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
  • In a discussion about how to attract younger members who may be too busy to attend regular weekly meetings, he suggested forming a "Passport Club".  This club would meet just once a month, with members committing to spend 3 hours a month performing some volunteer activities.  Our PR Committee will be discussing how to advertise this option.

Our annual e-Waste event is now scheduled for October 17.  This event will be a joint event with the Waldo County Sheriff's Office, with sponsorship including TRIAD, City of Belfast, the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency, and others.  The event will include electronic waste, document shredding, and medication disposal.  It will be held at the new Belfast Public Works Department facility on the Crocker Road.  It has been more difficult to put this together this year with the multiple sponsors; thanks to Doug Smith for this.

An idea has been proposed to replace our usual pancake breakfasts with a lobster roll drive thru.  Events like this have been tried by a number of other organizations nearby and have been very successful.  Lobster rolls are a high margin product so we should be able to raise some money, and we will be supporting our local lobster fishermen.  We are hoping to put something like this together by late September or early-mid October.  Anyone who wants to help put this together please contact me.

Keep the good ideas coming; in our present situation we need to be creative but we can have fun doing it.

Yours in friendship and service,
Richard
